Jamb Requirement for Medicine and Surgery

Candidates with the intention to study medicine and surgery in any of the Nigerian university has to sit for the following subjects in the JAMB UTME: English language (This is compulsory for all candidates), Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

However, there are some special waiver requirements you should also take note of. Some universities like the university of Maiduguri and Usman Danfodiyo university accept Mathematics in place of physics while the Nigerian Turkish Nile University of Nigeria prefer a subject combination of English language, Biology, Chemistry, and any other subject apart from Physics.

Candidates should note that JAMB cut off mark to study any course I a Nigerian university is 180 but most universities require candidates to have a minimum of 200 in their JAMB UTME score to become eligible to be invited for post UTME tests and possible admission. Since Medicine and surgery is a very competitive course, you are required to study very hard and score 220 to 250 in your JAMB UTME to stand a better chance of getting admission.

O’Level Requirements

To study medicine and surgery in any of the Nigerian universities, candidates must have at least five credits in their Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE). the results accepted include WASSCE/ NECO or any of its equivalent. A minimum of credit in the following is compulsory: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

For schools with special waiver requirement like the Nigerian Turkish Nile University of Nigeria accepts a minimum of a credit pass in any of the science subjects in place of Physics.

Direct Entry Requirement

Candidates can also apply for direct entry to study medicine and surgery. Application via direct entry affords candidates to resume into the university in the second year, I.e. 200 level. Such candidates are expected to meet any of the following requirements.

1.) Five credits in your O’Level examination. The subjects included are English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. Note that the accepted O’Level result includes WASSCE/ NECO or any of its equivalent in not more than one sitting.

2.) In addition to the five credits in your O’Level result, you are required to have A’Level passes in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Zoology.

3.) Candidates with BSc, BOS, in courses related to Medicine and surgery can also apply for direct entry. Candidates must not have a grade below second class lower division in any of the following courses: Nursing science, Anatomy, Physiology, Medical laboratory, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Zoology.

4.) Candidates should note that the university of Port Harcourt, Niger Delta University, and Bingham university do accept candidates via direct entry. Candidates with a degree in Dentistry can apply for direct entry to the university of Lagos while the university of Calabar accepts candidates with a degree in any science course but with a grade not lower than a second class lower division.
